Massachusetts elders are being warned about a new scam that targets the rebates they will receive from the federal government as part of their income tax filings.
Atty. Gen. Martha Coakley said Thursday that some long-used telephone scams have spread to the Internet, and while they may be more complicated, “they are essentially the same old ploy.
“They engage the elder in conversation, either on the phone or on-line, and ask for their personal information such as bank account or Social Security numbers.” Coakley spoke at a State House meeting on elder abuse and exploitation.
“We are seeing this already with the new federal rebates — already people are being called and told ‘Give us your Social Security number and we’ll send you the checks early,’ ” she said. Callers may pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Service or a bank.
People should hang up, or terminate the on-line exchange, said Edward J. Flynn Jr., executive director of South Shore Elder Services in Braintree. The home care agency has received calls from seniors who have gotten the fraudulent calls.
“Nobody, no reputable organization does anything like that,” Flynn said.
