NDP Leader Darrell Dexter unveiled $78.9-million worth of promises Tuesday for jobs, emergency rooms and wait times, students, seniors and roads.

His party’s commitment for jobs includes the creation of 2,200 positions through a manufacturers’ tax credit and a one-year program to rebate half the provincial sales tax on new home construction.

The rebate program, which would be retroactive to May 1, 2009, would allow up to 1,500 participants and provide a rebate up to $7,000.

The party is pledging to increase renewable energy to 25 per cent by 2015, a move the NDP asserts will generate $3 million a year in corporate tax revenue.

On emergency rooms, the NDP are vowing to open 17 more beds at the Halifax Infirmary, create a $3 million fund to recruit more doctors for hard-to-fill shifts at emergency rooms, reduce paper work for family doctors and spend $1.5 million to bring in one additional nurse practitioner for each district health authority.

As well, the party promises to reduce surgery wait times by spending $1.3 million on pre-hab teams that would help make sure people are fit for surgery through physiotherapy, nutrition, weight loss and other measures.

Mr. Dexter said his party plans to keep more young people in Nova Scotia by providing up to $15,000 to university and college grads who stay in Nova Scotia. After graduation, students who settle in this province can apply for a tax rebate every year for six years.

The NDP said it would create 250 new spots at the Nova Scotia community college for in-demand jobs. The NDP pledge to add 250 child care spaces and start a program called Every Kid Counts to help parents.

A platform plank from the last provincial election — to take the eight per cent provincial portion of the HST off basic home electricty — reappeared in Tuesday’s platform. The tax removal, which would cost $28 million a year, would take effect on Oct. 1, 2009.

The MacDonald government had removed the eight per cent tax off all electricity, but last spring scaled back the rebate to only electricity used for heat.

The party said it would provide $1 million for 1,000 insulation grants for low-income home owners. It also calls for an independent review of auto insurance, but the platform does not include a call for public auto insurance, a previous NDP plank.

The NDP said it would increase by 50 per cent the budget for resurfacing rural roads and launch a five-year paving plan.

For seniors, Mr. Dexter said they would bring in $500 self-managed care allowances for up to 250 people and $1.5 million home adaptations funds. Nursing homes would get nurse practitioners and residents would not have to pay security deposits.

The NDP would shrink the provincial cabinet to 12 ministers from 18, and eliminate seven executive assistants, an estimated savings of about $850,000. It would spend $100,000 for a private sector accounting firm to conduct an independent review of “the true state” of the province’s finances.

“Peace, Land, and Bread” But at what Price? $700 Hundred Billion Bank Bailout.

We do prefer FREEDOM, give us freedom, or give us death. I am not afraid of their threats.

There has to be a different solution; this can’t be the only way. Is there not some kind of free market solution? I mean, I know that they have screwed up the free market with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but won’t this bailout just screw it up more.

The Republicans need to come up with their own plan, and tell the Democrats to take it or leave it, and if they leave it, then they can pass their own Democrat Bailout Bill and be responsible for the economic outcome.

Although we do need to put this into perspective; what are we giving up and what are we to receive in return? I’m sure we all know the famous words of Patrick Henry:

“Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”

Now we are faced with a choice of:

“Is not having an economic down turn so dear, or having all of our toys so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?”

I have a feeling that if we let this happen, we’ll end up with chains and slavery, along with a bad economy, but I could be wrong.

House to meet Thursday after rejecting bailout
GOP, Democrats argue effect of Pelosi speech on $700 billion plans failure

WASHINGTON - In a stunning vote that shocked the capital and worldwide markets, the House on Monday defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue for the nation’s financial system, ignoring urgent warnings from President Bush and congressional leaders of both parties that the economy could nosedive without it. The Dow Jones industrials plunged 778 points, the most ever for a single day.

Democratic and Republican leaders alike pledged to try again, though the Democrats said GOP lawmakers needed to provide more votes. Bush huddled with his economic advisers about a next step. The House was to reconvene on Thursday instead of adjourning for the year as planned.

The stock plunge began even before the 228-205 vote to reject the bill was officially announced on the House floor. The decline for the day surpassed the 721-point previous record, on the day after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, though in percentage terms it was well short of the drops on Black Monday of October 1987 and at the start of the Depression.

“We could have gotten there today had it not been for the partisan speech that the speaker gave on the floor of the House,” Minority Leader John Boehner said. Pelosi’s words, the Ohio Republican said, “poisoned our conference, caused a number of members that we thought we could get, to go south.”

With the economic crisis, most of us are not concerned with the welfare of Wall Street but instead the stability of our homes and jobs.

Obama offers his 95% tax cut as a means of securing Ohios electorate. But a closer look at this proposal will show damaging ramifications on the American economy.

Minimizing taxes for these individuals will pressure those without the cut; American industry and small business.

This will, in turn, limit the availability of jobs and raise the prices of goods and services.

Only then would price controls and increased government involvement in industry attempt to solve the problem.

McCain is an advocate of eliminating superfluous government spending and sustaining small government.

John McCain will permanently repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax — a tax that was paid nearly exclusively by 25 million middle class families.

By repealing this tax, middle class families will save nearly $60 billion in a single year.

**A middle class family with children will save an average of over $2,700.**

A vote for John McCain is a vote for a REAL tax cut for working American families.

Gordon Brown’s U-Turn

Gordon Brown does a U-Turn on the 10p Tax rate, not because he is sympathetic to the low income earners but because he took a kicking in the local polls on May 1st.
He claims he’ll listen to the people now… do we believe him?
Not a chance.
Since Labour came to power they have systematically taken this once great country and flushed it piece by piece down the toilet.
Tax. Immigration. Illegal Immigration. Pensions. Schools. The NHS. Law and Order. The Family Courts. Family life. Freedom of speech. Nothing is sacred to this government.
They have even sold us out to Europe after promising a referendum.
Iraq, Afghanistan, they send our brave soldiers off to fight in countries with faulty equipment or no equipement whilst their families live in hovels back home.
It’s not Cameron who wants to ‘hug a hoodie’ it’s Labour who have created them and shield them from punishment.
The only way forward is to get rid of Labour, nu- labour, old labour, any Labour.
Vote them out.

Taxes #2 - 6 Different Taxes Are Not Enough!

In the Spring of 2007, Washoe County School District did hundreds of presentations to the public, trying to gain support for an increase in the Real Estate Transfer Tax. Currently, for Capital Spending on buildings, Washoe County School District has 2 revnue sources (taxes), Property Tax and Government Services Tax. Even if Washoe County School District added 4 more revenue sources, Real Estate Transfer Tax, Residential Construction Tax, County Infrastructure Tax, and the Transient Lodging Tax, that still would not be enough to cover the projected growth and the revitalization of older schools by over $100 million. Additional tax increase would still be needed in the Legislative Sessions of 2011, 2013, 2015,………………….

The discussion highlights the difficulty in projecting growth, when the school district has no voice in managing growth. If all 6 taxes would not be enough, what else is there? Income Tax? Business Income Tax? Services Sales Tax? The question remains unanswered.

Washoe County School District is currently working with the SB154 Construction and Revitalization Committee to write a tax increase for the 2008 General Election ballot in November. The district wants to borrow $600 million for new schools, repairs to older schools, and technology upgrades. When added to the current debt of $475 million, the total debt for Washoe County School District will exceed $1.1 Billion.

This is a great Idea to put forward the Fair Tax is to Eliminate personal and property tax on the county level with a sales tax! If enough counties pass something like THE HOMEOWNERS FAIR TAX then it will force the State government to pass something like the State Fair Tax with will eliminate all personal taxes and replace it with a sales taxes. If enough states will go along with a State Fair Tax then we could force the Federal Government to comply with the FAIR TAX and the repeal of the 16th amendment! I truly believe this is the way to get the FAIR TAX pass and it is easier to impliment a local Fair Tax than it is for the whole country. This way will also be easier to keep the Fair Tax true without congress compromising the FAIR TAX.

On June 16, 2008 candidate for Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Lorraine Green called for the elimination of property taxes for homeowners via the Homeowner’s Fair Tax.
